How Online Gaming Corners Benefit From the Right Pendant Light

Not everyone has a dedicated games room. Many people play online games in a corner of the living room, a spare bedroom or a nook under the stairs. These small gaming corners often end up lit by whatever happens to be there: a harsh ceiling light, a lamp borrowed from elsewhere or nothing but the screen. A well-chosen pendant light can transform them, defining the space and making long sessions comfortable.
I design lighting for homes, and gaming corners are one of the spaces where a single fixture makes the biggest difference. Here is how to choose the right pendant light.
Why a pendant works in a corner
A pendant hangs from the ceiling on a cord, chain or rod, bringing light down closer to where it is needed. In a corner, it marks out the gaming area as a distinct zone within a larger room, much as a pendant over a dining table defines the dining area. It also frees up desk space compared with a table lamp.
Pendants come in every style, from minimal metal shades to glass globes and small chandeliers, so they can match the rest of the room rather than looking like gaming equipment.
Placement and screen reflections
The most important rule is to keep the pendant out of the screen's reflection. A pendant hanging directly in front of a monitor or behind the player can create bright reflections and glare. Position it to the side of the desk or slightly behind the screen, where it lights the area without reflecting into your eyes.
Hanging height matters too. Over a desk, the bottom of the pendant typically sits around 70 to 90 centimetres above the surface, adjusted so it does not block your view or the screen. The principles are similar to those in how high to hang a chandelier over a dining table.
Shade and light direction
Opaque shades that direct light downward create a focused pool of light on the desk and reduce glare. Glass or open shades spread light around the room, adding ambient light but potentially more reflections. For gaming corners, a shade that directs most light down and slightly outward is usually best.
Diffused bulbs or frosted glass soften the light. Clear bulbs in clear shades can be beautiful but may create harsh points of light in peripheral vision.
Colour temperature and dimming
A warm or neutral bulb, around 2,700K to 3,500K, suits most gaming corners. Warmer light feels relaxed for evening play, while slightly cooler light is helpful for daytime or focused sessions. A dimmable pendant, or a smart bulb, lets you adjust for different times and activities.
When I tested several pendant setups for this piece in a small living room corner, the most comfortable combination was a dimmable warm pendant with a downward shade plus a neutral bias light behind the monitor, which kept evening sessions on browser game platforms, including a hub linked to ankertoto, easy on the eyes.
Plug-in options for renters
Hard-wiring a pendant requires a ceiling point and usually an electrician. Renters and people without a ceiling point in the right place can use plug-in pendants, which hang from a ceiling hook and run a cable to a wall socket. Swag hooks let you position the pendant exactly where you want it. These are simple to install and remove.
Is a pendant better than a desk lamp?
Desk lamps are the default choice for many gaming corners, and they are flexible and cheap. Some people argue a pendant is unnecessary. For small desks, I think a pendant often wins.
Desk lamps take up surface space, can be knocked over, and often shine into eyes or onto screens when adjusted carelessly. A pendant keeps the desk clear, defines the zone visually and provides even, glare-free light from above. That said, a small task lamp is still useful for reading notes or working on hobbies. Many good setups use both: a pendant for general light and a small lamp for tasks.
Matching the room
A gaming corner in a shared room should fit the rest of the space. Choose a pendant that matches other fixtures in material or colour, such as brass to match a living room chandelier or black metal to match shelving. This makes the gaming area feel like part of the home rather than an add-on. Checking materials and quality before buying is covered in what to check before buying a chandelier online.
A pendant checklist for gaming corners
- Position to the side, away from screen reflections.
- Hang 70 to 90 centimetres above the desk.
- Choose a shade that directs light downward.
- Use a warm or neutral dimmable bulb.
- Consider plug-in pendants if renting.
- Match materials with the rest of the room.
One more tip: choose a pendant with a cord length you can adjust. Gaming setups change over time, with new desks, monitors and chairs, and an adjustable drop lets the light follow without rewiring.
A small change, a big difference
The right pendant turns a makeshift gaming spot into a defined, comfortable corner that fits the home. More in our Buying Lighting section.

Why Online Game Players Should Rethink Harsh Overhead Lighting
In many homes, the gaming area is lit by a single overhead light: a bare bulb, a flush ceiling fitting or a bright LED panel.
